It looks like an interesting battle between reporters with the American CNBC news station and Remington Arms company. CNBC put together a documentary about failures with the Remington 700 rifle. Airing October 20, 2010, this investigation centers entirely on this one gun.

This investigative report made attempts to smear Remington as well as the gun manufacturing industry as a whole. Was some of this criticism deserved? That is up to you to decide.

The promo for the CNBC piece

Remington Arms Company has several responses on Youtube in an attempt to do damage control for their product. This rifle as a long history of service to game hunters, police, and military users around the world. It has been in the marketplace for many decades. It is definitely not new and untested technology, I am sure that there are millions in use worldwide.

The accidental shootings in the above CNBC promos could have been prevented the appropriate safety precautions. The old standby of keeping the muzzle in a safe direction would have prevented these accidents.

One of the responses by Remington below:

The video was a response to a different video where a cameraman stood in front and to the side of the firing line. This seems counter-intuitive, but will increase the consciousness of personal safety zones and muzzle direction of the firearms.

Of course real life situations are not like the firing range where everybody is safely behind the shooter. Situations are much more complex and many other people might be around the target and out of your control as a shooter. Of course you need to know your gun and be familiar with its operation, handling, and other characteristics. Situational awareness cannot be practiced at a range.

This video comes from the guys at Tactical Response.

Firearms safety is one of the vital considerations we all need to make to protect ourselves, family, and neighbors. Handling practices, storage, and control of the weapon are of utmost importance.

Handling all weapons, wheather it be knives or guns, must be taken very seriously. Considering the direction of the muzzle of pistols must be a constant awareness. Using built-in safeties is important, but ALL firearms must be always considered ready to fire. All firearms must be handled as if they are ready to fire, whether you are pulling the trigger or not.

Storing of firearms must be taken seriously to consider all possibilities for detection of unauthorized users. Whether it is by children or theives, the wrong people may get your gun. Care should be taken to ensure very good security and very good concealment.

Personal safety during practice is also important. Eye protection is vitally important. Metal and chemicals are flying, and they do not belong in a person’s eyes. Ears need to be protected to ensure hearing loss is minimized. Skin must be protected from chemicals, burns (including sun), and bruising.

Most people take safety very seriously, and hopefully you are one of them. But watch out for the next guy. Keep aware of situations where somebody else is not as safe and may harm you. Whether it is at the range, on the street, or in a home, the other guy is what you cannot control.
