I found a great interview where Mr Barr discusses the challenges face by Americans with regard to their Second Amendment gun rights. Governments are continually looking for ways to limit freedom, especially with regards to firearms. The Heller and McDonald Rulings were not definitive enough to limit government’s intent on restricting firearm ownership. He also considers the international pressures at the end.

A very interesting interview about the current state of Gun Rights in Chicago following the recent Supreme Court Case. The is the McDonald v. Chicago case, where Chicago residents’ rights were violated by over-restrictive laws on gun ownership.

Jim Hanson is a retired Special Operations Master Sergeant who discusses actions by the Second Amendment Foundation to ensure the gun rights of American citizens.

This is a good interview about where the future is headed with regards to upcoming court cases regarding gun control. Many questions are raised surrounded the permitting process, whether training should be required, and Jim makes a good point about the rights of property owners to determine their own policy regarding firearms.

Lots of press has been recently given to the Arts, Beats, and Eats festival in Royal Oak, MI. A suburb of Detroit, the local officials and festival organizers were attempting to make all firearms illegal on the public property holding the festival. Gun Rights proponents have stepped in to point out that this is illegal because of a conflict with state law, which provides preemption over local laws. (State firearms laws reign supreme over local ordinances).

The Michigan Open Carry group has pushed this issue with the Royal Oak city commissioners to have this rule repealed. Since they have the law on their side, they won. Legal open and concealed carry will be allowed at this event over Labor Day weekend.

This of course has quickly turned into a media frenzy. There have been many crazy news stories and anti-gun politicians putting crazy scenarios out about the danger this might present to the general public. Many legally-armed citizens will be able to attend this festival. Many dire predictions of possible dangerous outcomes.

It has been five days of since this story appeared on the Detroit Free Press web site, (one of several) and has already generated over 1,000 comments on both sides of the issue.

Of course, there are negative comments, such as:

“This is a disaster for public gatherings generally. Why would I want to go to a public event knowing that every other person there is packing heat? While I’m sure many are responsible gun owners there are bound to be some nut cakes as well. Patterson is trying to recreate a sense of security for people who enjoy the AB&E event. Unfortunately the crazies have made that a very difficult task.”

And comments like this:

“These are those little guys who drive big black SUV’s and pick-up trucks at high speeds in the left lane of the freeway tailgating anyone in their way. When they park they throw out their step ladder, climb down, strap on their weapon and look for a fight. Little people in big trucks with a large chip on their shoulder. Take your meds, stay home and stroke your gun.”

Many heart-warming comments also appeared, as follows:

“Somebody please give Mr. Patterson a copy of The Declaration of Independence, The Constitution of the United States of America, The Bill of Rights, make sure he has a legible copy of Amendment #2, and The Constitution of the State of Michigan. The law of the state is the issue here. He is not allowed to change the law in his county, city, township, or neighborhood to supersede the state laws. When he reads the Michigan Constitution he will realize that. People that want to carry a weapon openly are allowed to in this state. I have no fear of those who carry a weapon openly or concealed. This morning I joined the NRA and MCRGO. This morning also marks the day I will buy my first gun. It will be a handgun, and next week I will carry it openly where legally allowed to. Thank you for bringing this issue to the forefront.
Respectfully,
A new gun owner”

Also, this comment

“The reason AB&E was “targeted” was because the rule in their contract WAS ILLEGAL. Other festivals, such as the Dream Cruise were not “targeted” because they didn’t have any illegal rules/ordinances.

Law abiding citizens would have been carrying a firearm at this event regardless. When ever you go out into public, you are surrounded by people lawfully carrying firearms. 1 in 43 people in the state of Michigan has a CPL (Concealed Pistol License). You just don’t realize it because there is a tiny piece of cloth hiding it.

This wasn’t an “open carry issue”. This was an issue about a city board that thought they could create their own laws when in fact what they did was ILLEGAL. The only reason open carry was brought into this is because they were they only gun rights group that stepped up to fight it. They aren’t debating on the right to open carry at AB&E, they are debating on the RIGHT to carry (concealed or otherwise).

People need not fear these law abiding citizens.”

I am praying that this festival goes well, and demonstrates how responsible gun owners behave in reality, not fantasy.

This song follows his other hit song “I Like Guns,” which is a Youtube sensation for all of us that love anything that shoots a bullet. This new song has a great video to accompany the song and help explain it. Mostly the Australian experience of gun control. This was a tough lesson in how gun rights can be lost for a whole country.

Steve shows off some nice rifles, pistols, and revolvers, providing some cool images.

Enjoy!

The ruling on Monday, June 28, 2010 by the US Supreme Court in the case of McDonald v Chicago is historic and important. The 5-4 decision in favor of the individual right to keep and bear arms was an important upholdance of the Bill of Rights of the Constitution of the United States of America.

Many people rightly have concern about the four dissenting votes in this case. Rightly so. We seem to have four Justices at the highest level of the Judicial Branch of the U.S. government that do not interpret the Second Amendment to mean that individuals have the right to own firearms to protect and defend.

My first thought on hearing of this close decision was this:

“What if the ruling had gone the other way?”

What would the reaction of the pro-gun rights crowd be? Of course it would be peaceful, though the media might warn of cases of violence. I do not believe that this ruling would have been “The straw that broke the camel’s back.”

I am an optimist, and I believe that a ruling in favor of the City of Chicago’s gun ban would have strengthened the pro-gun rights movement. The election of President Obama was a large awakening for the movement. Without any direct threat or promise, many feared a change in the White House would greatly affect their Second Amendment rights. These fears were well founded by facts and previous actions of the President and his men.

This was a close victory for those that believe in the great American right to keep and bear arms. Let us not take this victory for granted and fail to see the other challenges in the future. Many elements of society still want to make it illegal for law-abiding citizens to own firearms with which to defend themselves. They will work any other avenues available.

One way to save on firearms is to get an FFL license. As a Federally Licensed Firearms Dealer, you can purchase and sell firearms from other dealers, wholesaler warehouses, and the manufactures while paying bargain prices.

You can turn this into a small business, or use it to increase your collection at a reasonable price. Start buying and selling on the internet, gun shows, or for friends. Or get deals on firearms and increase your collection with the same capital investment.

The current cast of characters in Washington would love to threaten our gun rights which could change the FFL process. You might want to get in while the current set of laws are known and understood. A sudden rush of FFL license applications would occur if things looked like they were about to change because of new legislation.

Changes in gun laws might also increase the need for Federal Firearms License holders to handle transactions between parties and monitor of the sale of firearms. Gaining your FFL license might be a good investment for a number of reasons.

The gun industry has gotten a windfall from the election of President Obama. Even though there have not been any moves by the Administration to get an Assault Weapons Ban or do other things to limit firearms, there has been a huge buying frenzy for guns and ammunition. Anybody that has tried to get ammo for pistols lately knows that WalMart has had empty shelves for at least the last six months.

Many pistols have long back orders and guns are getting bought up in record numbers. The number of people getting Concealed Weapons Carry permits has been huge as well. Smith & Wesson announced yesterday that their fourth-quarter profit more than doubled as compared to a year ago.

The fear and frenzy of the loss of second amendment rights has helped to educate those who have taken these rights for granted. The fear of not being able to get guns in the future has caused many prior non-gun owners to go out and get educated and purchase a firearm.

The gun industry has had strong sales and awakening from a larger cross section of the public, thanks to the election of President Obama. The threat of losing gun rights has awakened and encouraged a larger awareness among the public.
