Gun Free Zones- Funny and Serious

Gun Free Zones (Pistol Free Zones) are supposed to be safe, right? No guns are allowed, so there must be safe places to be. Many places have been made to be Gun Free Zones, including schools, universities, post offices, churches, courthouses, playgrounds, hospitals, airports, alcohol-serving establishments, etc. Some expected all gun crimes at these types of locations to stop. Unfortunately, the only persons following these laws are the good guy sides of the equation. Criminals are lawbreakers by definition, and a little gun free zone law does not stop them.

I found two great videos demonstrating this, one humorous, one more serious and informative. Both are from Fox News.

This all comes back to preserving the right of the law-abiding current and future citizens to defend themselves. Criminals have no respect for laws and will not abide by the cute little “Gun Free Zone” sign. Some simple-minded folks are soothed by the notion of a nice little sign and laws to go with it. Those upstanding non-criminal citizens that wish to defend themselves are not allowed to do so.

Punishing Legal Gun Owners in Portland, Oregon

Just read an interesting article about efforts to punish legal gun owners for gun violence committed by criminals. Author Dave Lister describes how an escalation of gang-related shootings has caused the mayor of Portland, Oregon to take exactly the wrong measures to protect the rights of legal firearms owners.

Five proposals appear at first glance to help curb the gun violence. The problem is that these actions attempt to limit legally-owned guns in the city, and impose new laws on the citizens that are most likely to obey them. The whole fallacy to these proposals is that criminals do not follow laws.

“Weapons” are for Criminals

Criminals use and possess weapons to use for criminal purposes. The term “weapon” is intended to mean an instrument used to attack a victim. Criminals use these tools to commit violent crime against victims that may or may not be intended.

Law-abiding citizens arm themselves for defense of their person and their loved ones. Firearms, knives, mace, tasers, etc. are used to defend against criminals with intentions of violent crimes. These items used for self defense should not be referred to as weapons, though police and media continue to do so.

The police classify all guns, knives, etc as weapons whether a person is a bad guy or not. The media continue the myth from the police, and spread the fear and terror to their public audience.

The good guys carry guns, firearms, pistols, defensive tools, knives, spray, etc. The bad guys are the ones with the weapons, and the American public needs to continually remind ourselves, the police, and the media of this fact.

Semi-Automatic Firearms defined

Semi-Automatic Firearms are the most common and popular technology in pistols and rifles in existence today. A video recently on Youtube reinforces this fact. The video is from the 1980′s, Leroy Pyle’s argument is much the same as it is today. What are “assault rifles?” Should these dangerous weapons be banned?

This is a great vintage video with a former police officer explaining the difference in weapons technology. It also includes government testimony about how the term “assault rifle” is misleading and hard to define. Testimony about the criminals converting semi-automatic rifles to full automatic rifles is included.

National Park Gun Ban

The National Park Gun Ban will end in February of 2010. It was a success for the pro-gun crowd that the gun ban was repealed, and the only consolation for the other side is that the ban will not take effect until 9 months after the law was signed.

Being able to carry weapons in National Parks will allow for greater self defense against criminals and animals. These huge swaths of land are so beautiful and pristine, yet are full of unwitting danger from humans and animals. Many people are overwhelmed with the beauty of the parks, and their senses are overwhelmed. Criminals know this.

National Parks are a great place for criminals to operate. People are not usally local, are unaware of their surroundings, and missing persons are a regular occurance. Tourists are typically full of money and many have their guard down as they just want to relax and spend time with family. People can be killed and kidnapped and the criminals have lots of places to disappear to and hide. These National Parks are huge and primitive. The old rules of basic survival are very important.

Being able to defend yourself and your family should return to the top of the list in these dangerous areas. Animals and criminals can be unexpected, and know the surroundings much better than you will. Carrying a firearm at least evens the playing field between the good and the bad.
