Just read an interesting article about efforts to punish legal gun owners for gun violence committed by criminals. Author Dave Lister describes how an escalation of gang-related shootings has caused the mayor of Portland, Oregon to take exactly the wrong measures to protect the rights of legal firearms owners.

Five proposals appear at first glance to help curb the gun violence. The problem is that these actions attempt to limit legally-owned guns in the city, and impose new laws on the citizens that are most likely to obey them. The whole fallacy to these proposals is that criminals do not follow laws.

Again, check out this interesting story here.

I recently read a very interesting and thought-provoking book by author Bill Forstchen titled One Second After. This book is a well-studied scenario of what might happen in the event of an EMP (electromagentic pulse) attack on the United States.

A big part of the book is the implementation of martial law. This concept is very abstract to most of us modern Americans, but it basically means that normal civil laws are suspended in favor of military control in circumstances of civil emergencies or unrest. One Second After demonstrates that survival of individuals and society are dependent upon a well armed population.

Massive shutdowns of society will have tragic effects on the population. Our dependence on basic food, medicine and electricity is extremely high, and the loss of these systems would set the country back 150 years in time.

Education and knowledge are the best way to understand our world and be prepared for challenges to come. This novel is a great way to begin or expand your understanding of local and national emergencies where the government may not be able to help its’ citizens.

Having guns and knowing how to use them can save your life in everyday situations, as well as national emergencies. They can be used for providing food and defense, and we must be sure to make sure these rights are preserved.

I highly recommend this book. It is an easy read, and moves along very well.

Education is the answer to firearms safety and the culture of guns in the United States. All youths need to learn how to respect and handle guns at a young age, and it needs to be mandatory for all children. Many states and regions require Firearms Safety education as part of Hunter’s Safety programs in order to qualify for hunting licenses. Thousands (Millions?) of children each year learn to respect and safely handle firearms each year prior to being allowed to hunt for sporting game. This is very practical education that should be taught to ALL children. Guns are very often found outside the forest, and it is important that children (who become adults) know how guns work and how they are handled.

Firearms safety is one of the very practical skills that is so important in modern American life. Gun Control advocates claim that many accidental shootings would be prevented by banning all guns. This has been proven not to work, and is an argument for another time. Increased firearms education would be much more effective at preventing accidental shooting. Thorough education of all Americans about gun safety would allow for citizens to police each other about gun safety. When people are educated enough to recognize that their safety is jeopardized by improper gun handling and securing of firearms, they will take actions to change the behavior of the gun handler.

Many people in American Society are scared of guns. And when you talk to them, it is because they are unfamiliar and uneducated about them. All they know is that guns can kill people. This is a very true statement, but the rest of the story is that a gun is just a tool, and it requires human interaction to operate it in order to kill a person. When this education takes place, and a person operates and understands firearms, outlooks change for the better towards firearms.

Education and communication is the key to convincing gun control believers that education is the answer to the accidental shooting argument.
