It looks like an interesting battle between reporters with the American CNBC news station and Remington Arms company. CNBC put together a documentary about failures with the Remington 700 rifle. Airing October 20, 2010, this investigation centers entirely on this one gun.

This investigative report made attempts to smear Remington as well as the gun manufacturing industry as a whole. Was some of this criticism deserved? That is up to you to decide.

The promo for the CNBC piece

Remington Arms Company has several responses on Youtube in an attempt to do damage control for their product. This rifle as a long history of service to game hunters, police, and military users around the world. It has been in the marketplace for many decades. It is definitely not new and untested technology, I am sure that there are millions in use worldwide.

The accidental shootings in the above CNBC promos could have been prevented the appropriate safety precautions. The old standby of keeping the muzzle in a safe direction would have prevented these accidents.

One of the responses by Remington below:

It is very important that all guns be handled in a safe manner. Firearms are designed to kill, and are a good tool for doing so. Normally this is for sport, but also can be used for self defense and sport such as target shooting.

Shotguns can be fun when used for shooting clay targets in the air. Doing this safely is very important so that we do not hurt ourselves or our fellow sportsmen. Knowing and understanding the particular firearm is very important, whether it be a pistol, rifle, or shotgun.

I found an interesting video about basic shotgun safety for clay shooting for a place called Rock Creek.

The video is very well done and easy to understand and comprehend. The instruction is very clear and concise, being very easy to follow.

The same general themes from this shotgun video can be followed for other firearms. Know how the safety operates, know how to check the chamber for a loaded shell, and keep the firearm pointed in a safe direction. Help prevent accidents and tragedies by following proper safety activities.

This video does not show blood and guts, but demonstrates a lesson to everybody about gun safety. He even appeared to check the chamber and have it verified by another adult present. It still fired into the floor. At least he had it pointed in a safe direction!
